How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

4 min read

Oil is the lifeblood of your engine. It lubricates moving parts, reduces friction, carries away heat, and prevents harmful buildup. But how often do you really need to change it? The answer depends on several factors.

The Old 3,000-Mile Rule

For decades, the standard advice was to change your oil every 3,000 miles or every three months, whichever came first. That recommendation made sense for older engines running conventional oil. But modern engines are built to tighter tolerances, and today's synthetic oils are engineered to last much longer.

What Modern Vehicles Actually Need

Most newer vehicles can go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between oil changes with conventional oil, and 7,500 to 10,000 miles or more with full synthetic. Your owner's manual is the best reference — it specifies the exact interval and oil type your engine requires. Many newer cars also have an oil life monitoring system that tracks driving conditions and tells you when a change is due.

Factors That Shorten the Interval

Certain driving conditions are harder on your oil and may require more frequent changes. These include frequent short trips where the engine does not fully warm up, stop-and-go city driving, towing or hauling heavy loads, driving in extreme heat or cold, and driving on dusty or unpaved roads. If any of these describe your typical driving, lean toward the shorter end of the recommended interval.

Conventional vs. Synthetic Oil

Conventional oil is refined from crude petroleum and works fine for many vehicles. Synthetic oil is chemically engineered for superior performance — it resists breakdown better, flows more easily in cold temperatures, and protects better under high heat. It costs more per quart, but because it lasts longer between changes, the annual cost difference is often minimal.

What Happens If You Skip Oil Changes?

Running old, degraded oil causes sludge buildup, increased engine wear, reduced fuel economy, and eventually engine damage. A skipped oil change is one of the cheapest repairs that can prevent one of the most expensive — an engine replacement.
