New Jersey adds two rules of its own. Every driver has an affirmative duty to make all reasonable efforts to remove accumulated ice or snow from the windshield, windows, hood, trunk, and roof before driving, with a fine of $25 to $75 per offense whether or not anything falls off. Separately, the state prohibits driving any vehicle equipped or loaded in a way that unduly interferes with the driver's vision to the front and sides, which is the statute an officer reaches for when a windshield is fogged over. So the honest answer is: no heat by itself will not strand you, but three versions of this problem mean you should stop driving and call a shop.
- The temperature gauge is climbing. No heat plus a hot gauge means the engine is running dry of coolant. Pull over before it overheats.
- You smell coolant inside the car or the windshield has a greasy film. That is a heater core leak, and the vapor is not something to keep breathing.
- You cannot keep the windshield clear. If the defroster cannot beat the fog or frost, the car is not safe to drive in the dark or the rain no matter how short the trip.

What You Can Check in Ten Minutes
- With the engine cold, look at the coolant overflow tank. The level should sit between the minimum and maximum lines. Low means a leak. Never open the radiator cap on a warm engine.
- Start the car and watch the temperature gauge for 10 minutes. If it never reaches the middle, suspect the thermostat. If it reaches the middle and the air is still cold, the problem is downstream of the engine.
- Run the fan through every speed. No air on any speed points at a fuse, resistor, or blower motor. Air only on high points at the resistor.
- Change the temperature from cold to hot and listen. Clicking or ticking from behind the dash for several seconds is a blend door actuator.
- Check both sides of the car. One side hot and one side cold on a dual-zone system is almost always a blend door actuator, not a coolant problem.
- Smell the air and touch the passenger floor. A sweet smell, a filmy windshield, or damp carpet means the heater core is leaking. Stop there and call a shop.
- Once the engine is fully warm, carefully feel the two heater hoses at the firewall. If both are hot, coolant is flowing through the core and the problem is the blend door or blower. If one is hot and one is cool, the core is clogged or the system has air in it.
Write down what you found. Telling a technician "gauge reaches normal, both heater hoses hot, clicking behind the dash" turns a two-hour diagnostic into a thirty-minute one.
